Abstract

X-ray reflectivity is used to probe the interface between two polar liquids (nitrobenzene and water). Addition of the electrolytes TBABr to the water and TBATPB to the nitrobenzene induces an electrostatic potential across the interface. For larger potential (fixed by the electrolyte concentration), the electrolyte distribution differs from the GouyChapman prediction. Deviations from the Gouy-Chapman theory are also measured in studies of the interlace between an aqueous solution of BaCl2 and a nitrobenzene solution of TBATPB. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 230th ACS National Meeting (Washington, DC 8/28/2005-9/1/2005).
