Abstract

The challenges faced by the networking world due to the advances in wireless communications and electronics are discussed. Wireless sensor networks, Internet technologies, and computing and sensor devices in micro-scale require innovative and multidisciplinary solutions in a technological world, which is quickly converging between sensing, control, and communication. Increasing adoption of emerging wireless technologies in industrial automation requires a standardization procedure for which ISA-SP100 Wireless Systems for Automation comes in to define procedures for implementing wireless systems in the automation and control environment. The new standard will improve system deployment, help identify and address vulnerabilities, and reduce the risk of system degradation and failure. The standard can help achieve interoperability among various wireless physical layers by providing data-level interoperability.
