Abstract

Butane dehydrogenation (DH) was studied on V/δ-Al2O3 catalysts with various surface VOx densities by UV Raman spectroscopy to unveil the dynamics of surface VOx and the nature of coke species under reaction conditions. Surface VOx species were reduced to some extent under butane DH conditions. The nature of coke species depends on the structure of VOx. Polyolefins/polyaromatics were the main coke species formed on both isolated and polymerized VOx. 1-Butene, 2-butenes, and 1,3-butadiene were possible intermediates for coke formation in butane DH since these C4 olefins develop similar coke species as in butane DH. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 229th ACS National Meeting (San Diego, CA 3/13-17/2005).
