Abstract

A Mg97Zn1Y2 alloy was spray-deposited using uniform (mono-size) droplet sprays produced by the controlled capillary jet breakup. Consisting of mono-size droplets of desired diameter chosen in the range of 500 - 1000 μm, and no fine, pyrophoric droplets, uniform droplet sprays permit stringent control of the thermal state of depositing droplets while assuring safe spraying. The solidification of traveling droplets was modeled. A level-set-method based numerical model was developed to simulate the deformation and solidification of a depositing droplet. Mg97Zn 1Y2 deposits produced under optimal spraying conditions had a uniform microstructure consisting of equiaxed grains of hcp Mg-rich solid solution and Mg12ZnY precipitates. Subsequent rolling resulted in further microstructural refinement and an increase in hardeness.
