Abstract

A convenient method of preparation of scarcely known mononuclear coordination compounds of trivalent tantalum was achieved by reduction of TaCl5 with KC8 in the presence of pyridine. Three crystalline forms of mer-trichlorotris(pyridine) tantalum (III) have been prepared and characterized. TaCl3(py)3 (1) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n, with a=9.242(1), b=12.596(2), c=15.689(5) Å, β=91.70(2)°, V=1825.6(7) Å3, Z=4. The pyridine solvate TaCl3(py)3·py (1·py) has an orthorhombic cell with space group C2221, a=8.7914(7), b=17.042(1), c=14.474(3) Å, V=2168.6(4) Å3, Z=4. The pyridine and toluene solvate, TaCl3(py)3·py·(C7H8) (1·py·tol) also crystallizes in space group P21/n, with a=8.624(5), b=18.750(4), c=14.916(5) Å, β=93.96(2)°, V=2406(2) Å, Z=4. The three pyridine and three chloride ligands coordinate to the tantalum(III) center with a meridional octahedral configuration.
