Abstract

A study of the tribological performance of a novel high wear resistant high Si Al-Si alloy weld overlay was performed. The overlay was to improve the wear resistance of the underlying alloy. The cost of the component was greatly reduced as the process was versatile to place the overlay only in critical areas. It was seen that the weld overlay had microhardness, scratch resistance, nonlubricated wear rates and abrasive wear resisitance similar to that of 390 Al alloy.
