Abstract
We propose an approach to addressing questions about the validity of a simulation model and we develop this approach in detail with respect to two objectives. The first objective is to decide when a successful test conducted on a model of a system justifies increased confidence in the system. The second objective is to decide when a model may be replaced by another model such that successful tests on the replacement increase our confidence in the system. The basis of our approach is a probabilistic interpretation of validation and we give specific definitions in terms of the response function of the system and its models. Within this approach, we derive conditions under which confidence in a model justifies it as a surrogate in testing and similar conditions under which a model may be replaced by another.
