Abstract
Efforts are underway to develop miniature transistor inverters for electric vehicle applications. An effective way to make the inverter smaller is to increase the inverter efficiency and reduce the volume of the required cooling fins. Bipolar junction transistors configured in the Darlington structure are most suitable for realizing inverters of high efficiency at power levels under a few hundred kVA. However, these transistors have higher on-state drop due to driver transistors. Significant reductions in the on-state drops can be achieved using the direct base drive method. To further improve inverter efficiency, an energy recovery snubber is used to remove the switching losses.
