N2 - Civil infrastructure plays an important role in both economic and societal sustainable development. Within a life-cycle context, structural systems may be subjected to abnormal events and decisions regarding the functionality of these systems should be made in order to meet societal needs. In this paper, a framework for the seismic performance assessment of highway bridges under mainshock and aftershock sequences is presented. The time effects associated with the mainshock and aftershock events are integrated within the proposed seismic risk assessment procedure. Overall, the risk assessment of a bridge under seismic activity is based on a set of damage states, which are mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive. Additionally, the time-variant risk associated with repair loss and functionality of a bridge subject to mainshock followed by aftershocks are presented. The proposed methodology is illustrated on a bridge located in California, USA.
