Abstract
A theory of orbital dynamics in 3d transition-metal oxides, in particular, perovskite manganites, and their observation by polarized light/x-ray scatterings are presented. We examine three kinds of orbital excitations and their observations: collective orbital excitation observed by Raman scattering, critical orbital fluctuation by resonant diffuse x-ray scattering, and individual orbital excitation by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. Theoretical results are compared with the recent experiments in LaMnO 3.
