Abstract

A project, TOP500, was started to provide a reliable basis for tracking and detecting trends in high performance computing, where the list of sites operating the 500 most powerful computer systems are assembled and released. It is found that IBM remains the clear leader in the TOP500 list, increasing its lead to 51.8 percent of systems and 57.9 percent of installed performance. It is believed that the progressive steps in computational science needs community focus on vital core such as software, mathematical models and the algorithm it encodes. Domain scientists want to create much larger, multi-dimensional applications in which a variety of independent models are coupled together or fully integrated.
