Abstract

The neutron detector array for the Nanoscale-Ordered Materials Diffractometer instrument at the Spallation Neutron Source is discussed. The instrument employs a unique arrangement of helium-3 filled, linear position sensitive detectors in three distinct modular packages. Instrument specific requirements that lend to the unique detector design are discussed herein. This paper focuses on the mechanical design of the detector array, detector tube design, and specific detector performance aspects. Additionally, a general overview of helium-3 linear position sensitive detector physics, associated signal processing methods, and acceptance testing criteria are presented.
