In June 2019, the National Microbiome Data Collaborative (NMDC) was launched at the American Society for Microbiology conference as a pilot initiative funded by the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science, Biological and Environmental Research programme. The NMDC seeks to address fundamental roadblocks in microbiome data science and gaps in transdisciplinary collaboration. Presented here are the two strategic priorities — infrastructure and engagement — for the NMDC and future activities to support the long-term vision.
