The LINPACK package is a collection of Fortran subroutines for solving various systems of linear equations. The software in LINPACK is based on a decornpositional approach to numerical linear algebra. The general idea is the following. Given a problem involving a matrix, A, one factors or decomposes A into a product of simple, well-structured matrices which can be easily manipulated to solve the original problem. The package has the capabiIity * Work supported in part by the Applied Mathematical Sciences subprogram of the Office of Energy Research, U. S. Department of Energy, under Contract W-31-109-Eng-38.
