Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop an experimental method based on Rossi-a distribution curve to obtain the reflector kinetics parameters in the IPENMB-01 reactor. Those parameters are important to understand the behavior of the IPEN/MB-01 nuclear reflector and to determine the subcritical reactivity in a purely experimental way. It is known that the more subcritical the system, the more detectable the reflector effect. Due to this fact a heavy neutron reflector of stainless steel was used to intensify the neutron reflection. The experiment employed 32 stainless steel plates and the plates were introduced in the west face of the core. The neutron lifetimes in the core (τC) and reflector (τr) region and the reflector return fraction (f) were obtained in four subcritical levels. The subcriticality was achieved using the control banks (BC#1 and BC#2) insertion. The Two-Region theoretical model was applied to derive the least square fitting equations and the reflector kinetic parameters. The results showed that the behavior of the prompt neutron generation time is in concordance with those calculated using the generalized perturbation theory (GPT) estimated by the Three-Dimensional Discrete Ordinates Neutron/Photon Transport Code (TORT).
