Abstract

The concept of an external antenna employed by a DESY ion source was studied using finite element analysis. The study showed that the antenna can be utilized in rf sources operating under high average power conditions, in the regime which is of interest to new facilities. On scaling the demonstrated DESY operating period of 25,000 h to the SNS duty factor, a lifetime of 25000 h×0.1%/6%=417 h was obtained. The power limit was found to be compatible with an expected H - ion current of about 60 mA using a 6% duty factor.
