Abstract

Several studies were conducted to show that amorphous boron suboxides can be used effectively in the commercial surface engineering applications. Boron suboxides belongs to the class of boron rich solids, forming icosahedral structures interconnected through few oxygen atoms. A team at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) successfully deposited boron suboxide in the form of thin films. The ORNL studies motivated the HY-Tech Research, which suggests that now it is possible to produce boron suboxide films commercially. Boron soboxides are being used in orthopedic implant coating project which includes wear against steel and hard ceramics followed up with tribological analysis. Dennis Music at Linköping University in Sweden also demonstrated some topics related to boron suboxide's use in surface chemistry. There are still some questions which needs to be addressed and studies that need to be undertaken to push boron suboxides as a viable surface engineering solution.
