Abstract

Reactions during thermal decomposition of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) treated wood were modeled using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), to guide the development of thermal decomposition methods for disposal of CCA treated wood. Arsenic (V) oxide was found to volatilize at 600 °C in air and nitrogen. During 5 °C/min ramp in a hydrogen mix, arsenic (V) oxide began decomposition at 425 °C. Arsenic volatile loss from CCA treated wood depended strongly on gases produced by wood thermal decomposition.
