    Abstract

A procedure was developed to extract single ligaments from ceramic foam materials and to determine their tensile properties. Results are presented for ligaments of 20 pore-per-inch (ppi) carbon foams and ligaments of 20 and 45 ppi CVD-SiC foams. While the distribution of strengths of the carbon foam ligaments could be described with a one-population Weibull distribution, it was found that a two-population Weibull distribution was necessary to describe the distribution of strength of the SiC ligaments.
