    Abstract

    Results are presented of a systematic survey of [Formula Presented] bifurcation in 19 superdeformed bands in [Formula Presented] Eu and Gd nuclei. The majority of bands show no sign of this regular oscillation in energy levels. The statistical significance of the few examples that exhibit the effect is examined.
