Abstract
The atomic-level characterization and synthesis of Ni nanoparticles in alumina matrix were discussed. In the alumina matrix, the single domain magnetic nickel nanocrystals were embedded using pulsed-laser deposition. Scanning tunneling electron microscopy with atomic number contrast in conjunction with electron energy loss spectroscopy were used for structural characterization at the atomic level. It was found that the Ni nanoparticles were well separated and have interfaces with the host matrix that were atomically sharp and free of oxide layer.
