Abstract

Scientists at the Brookhaven National Laboratory have discovered unexpected property of the cuprates. Using molecular beam epitaxy to prepare three-layer junctions with atomically smooth films, the team observed a "giant proximity effect" in a high-temperature superconducting device for the first time. The term giant in the new results arises from the abnormally large distance or coherence length over which this effect occurs.
