Abstract
The HDN of pyridine over a Mo2N/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was investigated in the presence and absence of sulfur. It has been found that the HDN activity of reduced passivated Mo2N/γ-Al2O3 catalyst is decreased considerably in the presence of thiophene. The interaction and reaction of both thiophene and H2S on fresh Mo2N/γ-Al2O3 have been characterized by in situ FT-IR spectroscopy combined with CO as the probe molecule. The IR spectra of CO adsorbed on the catalyst treated with a thiophene/H2 mixture show that thiophene could be easily hydrodesulfurized in the presence of H2 on fresh Mo2N/γ-Al2O3 at temperatures as low as 373 K and the surface was sulfided consequently. H2S can strongly affect the surface active sites and sulfide the surface easily even at 373 K. Similar cases with passivated Mo2N/γ-Al2O3 catalyst were also investigated.
