Structure property relationship of powder processed Fe-Al-Si alloys

Abstract

Fe-15Al, Fe-15Al-5Si, and Fe-15Al-2.8Si powder alloys were produced with high-pressure gas atomization to obtain a high fraction of metal injection molding quality powder. The powders were consolidated by either hot extrusion or vacuum sintering and were heat treated at 600 °C to develop equilibrium structures above the maximum test temperature. Punch tests revealed the yield strength to increase with silicon content. The Fe-15Al-5Si alloys failed by transgranular cleavage below 150 °C before plastic flow was observed. The Fe-15-2.8Si alloy had a room temperature yield strength of 514 MPa and a fracture energy of 400 mJ. The sintered alloys performed well in comparison with the hot extruded samples.
