Abstract

Electron density maps (EDM) of the ripple phase formed by phosphorylcholine lipids such as dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC), palmitoyl-oleoyl phosphatidylcholine (POPC), dihexadecyl phosphatidylcholine, and dilauroyl phosphatidylcholine (DLPC) were presented. It was observed that the ripple bilayers have a sawtooth shape with one arm being almost twice as long as the other in all the systems except DLPC. It was suggested by EDMs of all the systems with saturated hydrocarbon chains that a mean chain tilt exists along the ripple wave vector.
