Abstract

Tb6Fe1-xCoxBi2 (x 0, 0.125, 0.250, 0.375) compounds have been synthesized, and the structural and magnetic properties are reported. All of the compounds crystallize in the hexagonal Zr6CoAs2-type structure at room temperature, but low temperature x-ray diffraction measurements on the Co-doped samples Tb 6Fe0.750Co0.250Bi2 and Tb 6Fe0.625Co0.375Bi2 show a splitting of the Bragg peaks, indicating a symmetry lowering structural phase transition at ∼40 K. Two magnetic transitions are observed, with TC1 ∼ 250 K and TC2 ∼ 70 K. While the high temperature transition corresponds to the ferromagnetic ordering of the Tb moments, the lower transition is most likely linked to the structural transition.
