Abstract
A strength testing method was developed in order to provide information on intrinsic mechanical properties of abrasive grains. It was demonstrated that abrasive grains in the size range 100μm to 1000μm could be strength tested in compression. Fracture load distributions were successfully analyzed in terms of Weibull statistics. The measured grain strengths scaled well with other properties such as friability and toughness. From the present experiments grains with a wide versatility are strong grains (high characteristic strength) with a large spread in fracture loads (low Weibull modulus).
