abstract = "A new scheme for the efficient application of spatial adaptivity to time-dependent problems has been derived. Specifically, we avoided having recourse to several consecutive mesh adaptations per time step, but rather derived a criterion to allow the same spatial mesh to be employed for several time steps before performing a new mesh adaptation, thus reducing the computational cost while preserving the quality of the numerical solution.",
