Abstract

Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) enhancement of pool boiling heat transfer of R-123 - oil mixture over a smooth tube was studied experimentally. Experiments were performed as a function of parametric quantities of surface heat flux, electric field potential, and refrigerant oil contamination. It is demonstrated that R-123 has a very favorable response to the EHD enhancement mechanism, yielding over 450% enhancement at 0% oil concentration. The lubricant has an adverse effect on the magnitude of enhancements. However, the effect is most pronounced at the lower heat flux levels and it has little or no effect at the higher heat flux levels. Results of flow visualization experiments at various oil concentrations and electric field potentials are discussed and used to facilitate interpretation of the EHD boiling enhancement mechanism.
