Some measurement required

Abstract

Dr. Scott Smith, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, US, suggests that machine tool users need to perform some measurements and gather certain information to increase productivity. He suggests that the knowledge of appropriate speed and permissible DOC can help users increase the productivity of their machine tools. Users also need to gather information about the number of teeth on the tool, as that factor changes the location of stable pockets in the stability lobe diagram. Users need to gather information about the frequency response function (FRF) of machine tools to increase their productivity. The FRF is a measurement of the characteristic vibration of a tool and it is the item that needs to be measured to maintain the stability lobe diagram specific to a machine tool setup. Impact excitation is a simple technique that measures FRF and requires hitting the tool tip with an instrumented hammer.
