Abstract

It is shown that a multimode optical fiber sensor, based on speckle pattern modulation, can be used as a vibration sensor to measure the frequency and amplitude of a disturbance. It is then shown that the fiber can be used simultaneously as an on-board communication channel and a vibration sensor. Experimental results and system configurations are described, as are the overall cross-talk effects of the communication channel and the vibration sensing signal. Finally, techniques for improving the degradation effects of the communication channel and sensing system are presented.
