Abstract
The focus of this study is on the pyrolysis and decomposition of the gel formed by hydrolysis and condensation of organo silicon alkoxides. The authors were interested in finding conditions that would allow them to control the stoichiometry of the pyrolysis products of silicon-alkoxide gels. The availability of a large number of silicon alkoxides with varying ratios of Si to C suggested the use of mixed alkoxides for gel formation. The 100% and 80% gels resulted in a final product at 1500 degree C containing 61 and 76% SiC, respectively, with the balance consisting mainly of C and a small amount of SiO//2. The 60% gel resulted in the highest percentage of SiC.
