Abstract

SERDP initiated two major research programs to investigate emissions from military aircraft, and establish techniques and methodology for aircraft emissions measurement. These two research programs focus on different aircraft. The Team #1 focuses on airlifter cargo aircraft and bombers, while the Team #2 focuses on fighter jets. An additional focus of the Team #1 is helicopter emissions since helicopter is primary used by the Army as their main air transport. A joint field measurement campaign was conducted by members of both team in October 2005. A C-130H cargo aircraft operated by the Kentucky Air National Guard was used as the test platform. This successful campaign provided extensive emissions data for the team members to learn to improve their measurement techniques and to characterize the emissions characteristics of the cargo aircraft emissions. The results of this joint study are to be presented in this year's conference (Abstract numbers 27, 37, 122, 269, 391, 404, and 564). The SERDP military aircraft emissions programs are continued into the cases for fighter jets, B-52 bombers, and helicopter in the coming years.
