Abstract

Operational Performance Risk Assessment (OPRA) is a tool that evaluates control options that can be taken to avoid a plant trip. OPRA is part of a risk-informed decision-making control system. Once OPRA is incorporated into a plant control system, it can provide considerable benefits, including reduced plant staffing, optimized maintenance activities, greater plant availability, and higher operating efficiency. OPRA makes risk-informed decisions based on a probabilistic assessment of the likelihood of successfully avoiding a trip setpoint given the status of the plant/systems and component health. OPRA then communicates the options to a digital representation of the physical plant (i.e., a digital twin [DT]) to assess a set of operating parameters for each control option identified by OPRA.
