Abstract
R-410A is widely used in residential and light commercial air-conditioning, heat pump and chiller systems. Increasing concerns about climate change have resulted in the proposal of various environmental regulations to phase out R-410A and other hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). This paper presents two new nonflammable R-410A replacement refrigerants with GWP < 750 and GWP < 400. These new refrigerants are safer to use (nonflammable), reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and can be used in existing installations without significant changes. The experimental results of these two new refrigerants in a 3-ton R-410A heat pump system showed exceptional performance with matched capacity, matched or higher efficiency, and close to R-410A discharge temperature. Thanks to the lower GWP and higher efficiency of these two new refrigerants, the overall environmental benefits are shown with reduction of total emissions.
