Abstract

Measurement of stresses and strains in the mercury target vessel of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is important to understand the structural dynamics of the target. This work reports the development of radiationresistant fiber optic strain sensors for the SNS target instrumentation. Experimental results demonstrated the suitability of the sensor for measurement of ∼ 100 kHz strains at up to 109 Gy radiation doses.
