Abstract
This work aims to understand the fundamental physical and chemical interactions that take place at the interface of SiC and Ag/Pd, and which give rise to the observed diffusion behavior of these metallic species in TRISO particles. In order to do so we have synthesized SiC/Ag/SiC and SiC/Pd/SiC multilayers of various thicknesses by PLD and characterized them using SEM/EDS. Initial results show that upon annealing Ag agglomerates and ruptures the SiC layer to be released. In the case of Pd a strong chemical interaction is deduced from the slow interlayer diffusion and limited release. Further studies using photoelectron spectroscopy and RHEED will be carried out in order obtain detailed information on the chemical and physical transitions that undergo upon annealing of these systems.
