N2 - Role of applied stress on intragranular precipitation in Mg-Nd alloys was investigated by subjecting Mg-0.5at%Nd tensile bars to creep deformation at a nominal stress of 90 MPa and 177°C. Prior work on creep-tested Mg-Nd studied precipitation after 100 Hrs of creep deformation [Choudhuri et.al. Metal Trans A Comm.2013, 44, 2905]. Developing on this published work, the present investigation systematically examined precipitate formation during early (5 Hrs) to middle (100 Hrs) stages of creep. Very early stages of creep resulted in a homogeneous distribution of fine-scale β' precipitates within α-Mg matrix. Contrastingly, within similar time frame a relatively localized distribution of β1, precipitates was noted - presumably decorating dislocation lines. Interesting, throughout the creep deformation, β1 plates exhibited preferential alignment tendencies on a specific set of {1010}Mg planes / <1120>Mg directions. Such preferential alignment along favorable slip directions within the α-Mg matrix may influence the creep response of the Mg-Nd alloy.
