Abstract

In this work, we present the first observation that the presence of Au species assists the storage of active oxygen species in FePO4, which opens up two channels for CO oxidation on Au/FePO4 at rt: Mars-van Krevelen (redox) and direct (e.g. Langmuir-Hinshelwood) mechanisms. Non-reducible Au/LaPO4 catalyst is investigated for comparison and there is little evidence for redox channel on this catalyst. Interestingly, a negatively charged Au is found on this non-reducible catalyst, that has previously only been observed on reducible oxides supported Au catalysts. The application of the phosphate-based supports opens up a new avenue in the search for highly active, stable, and selective gold catalysts for a number of catalytic reactions. In addition, studies of this type of support shed new light on the reaction mechanism associated with gold-based catalysts.
