Abstract

A nonlinear modulation scheme based on coupling between optically excited surface plasmons in a thin gold film and the heating of the film by a pulsed direct current was analyzed. It was observed that the reflected surface-plasmon excitation beam was spatially deformed, as a function of a pulsed current through the foil. It was also observed that the coupling could be sustained in a broad spectral range and was used for operating photonic applications. The results show that the current through the thin film was modulated by the action of excitation of surface plasmons using infrared photons.
