Abstract

A research study on the longitudinal and transverse structure of Kevlar (poly(para-phenylene terephthalamide)), Kevlar 49 (heat-treated Kevlar under tension) and poly(para-benzamide) (PRD-49) fibres is presented. Transmission electron microscopy, secondary electron imaging, and electron diffraction techniques were used. It was found that the fibre core had a layered structure with layers (composed of rod-shaped crystallites) stacked perpendicular to the fibre axis. Some crystallites were found to extend through two or more layers resulting in an increase in strength along the fibre axis.
