Abstract

In this paper, the accuracy of one-fluid VOF methods is investigated for problems which involve strong fluid-solid structure interaction. Experimental and numerical results of flow over a containment dike are used to asses the effect of using conventional and more accurate boundary conditions at the free-surface. It is shown that the use of variable density in surface cells yields more accurate results than those obtained when constant density is used. It is found that the application of pressure boundary conditions at the free surface dramatically improves the accuracy of the numerical simulations. It was also found that the numerical treatment of fluid cells adjacent to solid interfaces is critical for problems where significant impact occurs between fluids and solid structures.
