Abstract

Shell and coil heat exchangers have been used in a wide variety of applications, for example, heat recovery processes, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, because of its compact structure, larger heat transfer area and higher heat transfer capability due to the curvature of coils. Flow characteristics in the inner of coils are carefully investigated through numerous theoretical and experimental works. On the other hand, flow characteristics for the shell-side are mentioned on very few occasions. Based on the simulation results, the complicated flow phenomena occurring within the shell-side can be reasonably captured. Through CFD analysis, the technique to improve the performance of shell and coil heat exchangers was proposed using the shell-side swirling flow. Existing experimental data have been used to validate the present CFD model.
