Abstract
Conventional acoustic based methods are not effective on asphalt bridge deck due to high attenuation of elastic waves in asphalt. Ground penetration radar (GPR) is the only applicable NDT method for evaluation of bridge decks with asphalt overlay. In this study, an automated acoustic scanning system and GPR were combined to evaluate an asphalt overlaid bridge deck under repair. GPR was used to scan the bridge deck with asphalt overlay before and after repair. When the asphalt layer was removed during repair, the bare concrete deck was scanned using both GPR and the acoustic scanning system. Equipped with high precision positioning GPS and non-contact acoustic sensors, the automated acoustic scanning system can provide a high-resolution delamination map of the bridge deck in real time.
