The seminal experiments for which Prof. Brockhouse received his award were carried out at the NRU research reactor at the Chalk River Laboratories of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Chalk River, Ontario. This reactor, still one of the foremost research reactors in the world, is now 38 years old and it is not expected to continue operating much beyond the end of the decade.
