Abstract

The crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting of the Er3+ 4f-shell in the high-Tc superconductor ErBa2Cu3O7 doped with Zn and Ni as well as disordered by fast neutron irradiation has been studied by the inelastic neutron scattering technique. The results are used to derive information on the effective charge associated with the superconducting CuO2 planes and support the idea of magnetic fluctuations to be the mechanism leading to the formation of a superconducting state.
