Abstract

The microstructure and nanophase decomposition of metastable ZrO 2(3Y 2O 3)/Al 2O 3 coatings formed by air plasma spraying was analyzed by combined TEM techniques of nanoprobe diffraction and X-Ray EDS spectroscopy. For the ZrO 2(3Y 2O 3)/20%Al 2O 3 composition, the initial splat-quenched metastable structure consists of a high volume fraction of primary ZrO 2-rich particles with a thin intergranular phase of eutectic composition. Nanoprobe diffraction analysis revealed the presence of two phases: cubic-ZrO 2, and intergranular nanoscale δ-Al 2O 3. Upon heat treatment at 1200°C, the tetragonal ZrO 2 phase appears with a fine-intergranular dispersion of nanoscale α-Al 2O 3. When the annealing temperature reaches 1400°C, the microstructure evolves into an equilibrium non-segregated nanocomposite structure consisting the α-Al 2O 3 grain dispersed within the ZrO 2 matrix.
