Abstract

This chapter describes important considerations for tool wear in machining. It includes: the relationships between machining parameters, workpiece material properties, cutting forces, and the corresponding temperature field in the chip; tool life, common wear features, and the relationship between tool life and machining cost; and cutting fluids and their effect on tool life. It concludes with a case study showing the application of machine learning to tool life modeling.
