Abstract

The measurements of the elastic moduli of Cd2Re 2O7 through the 200 K cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition, were presented. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements were performed as a function of temperature to determine the elastic moduli of the sample. Analysis of the elastic moduli using Landau theory showed that the transition was consistent with Cd2Re2O7 being classified as a ferroelectric metal in the weaker sense as described by Anderson and Blount. First-principles calculations which were performed in the local density approximation, showed that the dominant lattice instability corresponded to a twofold degenerate mode with Eu symmetry.
