Abstract

The evaluation method for the continuous R-curve behavior of ceramic matrix composites was developed. The fracture tests with unloading-reloading sequences were conducted by using compact tension (CT) and double notched tension (DNT) test specimens. Based on the correlation between permanent deformation and crack opening displacement (COD), the compliance of test specimen was estimated continuously. Effective crack extension and fracture resistance of C/C and SiC/SiC composites were obtained from the estimated compliance. The effects of specimen shape on the continuous R-curve behavior of ceramic matrix composites were investigated.
